Wednesday Roundup: October 31, 2012

I find it hard to believe that October ends today.  I also find it hard to believe that there are only two more months left in 2012!  Let's get to it shall we?

Wednesday Roundup...The Bullet Edition

  • I spent most of Monday evening watching Sandy coverage. I just could not tear myself away. I have a friend who lives outside of Philadelphia and I was concerned about her and her little 7 week old. They are doing well. Power was restored yesterday.
  • I have been on twitter like a pigeon on garbage. I have been so interested in the photos of the destruction caused by Sandy. It is just so unbelievable to me. Also, twitter is good for a laugh when you are down and out.
  • I firmly believed that yesterday was today. Maybe it was more wishful thinking than anything else. I don't know, but I fully expected to have my "beginning of the month" emails this morning and well I didn't.
  • We get on average 0 trick or treaters on Halloween. It actually works out great because we have two big dogs and trying to wrangle them and hand out candy would be a nightmare. I usually put out a sign that says, "Sorry no candy. Elliott & Cooper ate it all". Not that it is really needed. The street is so dark and there are very few houses. I think most people hit the college, treat street, and the more populated streets, the drives, etc.
  • I expect work to be a balance between quiet (in the am) and chaotic (beginning at 1130). All of that is fine with me.  I think.
  • I am close to finishing a project. I am working on the actual finishing touches. Which translates to a lot of sewing and attaching various things. It is going to be cute and it is most likely not going to its intended recipient.
  • I am 100% convinced that I am not going to finish all the Christmas presents I had hoped/planned on. I am also 100% okay with that as I am not one who deals well with the pressure.
  • The weather has been odd.  On Saturday morning we awoke to snow, which melted. The weather has been cool, but the last few days has warmed considerably. It is so odd that they are predicting highs in the 60s today. It is Halloween. Traditionally children have to wear their winter coats and snow boots on Halloween. Odd.
  • I didn't do the Ten on Tuesday yesterday because they were looking for your favorite or top scary movies. I don't watch "scary" movies. I have never been into them. So that was wasted on me.
  • I fear that I have to reset my DVR. It is not allowing me to access On Demand. WTH? Tonight would probably be the best night, as there is very little I record/watch. It could also be that my DVR is conking out. I hope not, because I hate resetting my series recordings! I always miss one or two.
  • Do you hate it when a show you watch/watched is no longer on and nobody bothered to mention it was cancelled? The only reason I know is because I was flipping through my series record list and saw it. So frustrating.
  • Even more frustrating is the fact that I found out that NBC is putting Revolution on hiatus. After the new showings stop (which I am guessing is around the Christmas season), no new shows until March 25th. Wait. What? March 25th? I can't go that long without one of my new favorite shows!
And, that's the roundup!

Friday Four: Volume 1 Issue 4

With the arrival of winter in Montana, I am currently looking at snow on the lawn, I thought I would list my...

Four Favorite Things About Winter

  1. Snow - I love the look of snow.  I love how crisp and clean things feel.  I love the way the light plays off a snow covered street.  I love to look out into the dark of night and see a blizzard.
  2. Snuggles - I love to snuggle up under a blanket during winter.  I love to wear a big cozy sweater and warm fuzzy socks.  I love to watch Elliott lay on the floor register or in front of the fireplace to get warm.
  3. Snow Angels - Okay so I am too old to get down and make them, but I have my own version  I love when my little boys come in with their faces covered in snow.  I don't so much like the smell of wet dogs, but I love to see the snow glistening off their black features.
  4. How It Feels - Winter just feels natural in Montana.  It feels normal to have snow on October 26th.  It is quintessential Montana.  The snow covered mountains, the frosted over trees.  It is a cloak that Montana wears that makes it even more beautiful than it already is.
What are your favorite things about winter?  Do you love it?  Do you hate it?  Do you even have it?  Hit the comments section and let me know!

Hey, It's Okay Tuesday: October 23, 2012

It's okay... have checked out the webinar early to save my sanity and the life of a co-worker. have not watched any of the debates. be miffed that I don't get an "I Voted" sticker just because I vote absentee.  Apparently it is too hard to include in the envelope with my ballot, secrecy envelope and instruction sheet. want to knit something for everyone I know with only 9 weeks left until Christmas and not enough hours to complete them all.

...that I watched three t.v. shows yesterday while working.  Thanks Hulu+, wi-fi and iPad.  To be fair, I got a lot of work done during that time as well. still find South Park funny and relevant.

Music Monday: Volume 1 Issue 6

It seems that country music was on heavy rotation today…

1.       Fishin’ In the Dark – Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – You won’t find a lot of country music on my iPod.  I sometimes think that Hell is piped in with country music.  But there are a few songs that I really enjoy and this, while twangy, is one of them.  In Montana you don’t get the Lady Gaga’s or Ke$ha’s.  You get country and lots of it.  In my town you don’t get many concerts to begin with so when a group comes to town, you just go.  I saw NGDB with Sawyer Brown and for a few hours I was country.  It’s a catchy tune and takes me back to my teens.

2.       Love’s Been a Little Bit Hard on Me – Juice Newton – I can’t figure out if this qualifies as country or a crossover.  In any event it is another song that I really enjoy from way back.  I also saw Juice Newton in concert in my little town.  I like that the song kind of tells a story about why she is the way she is.  I often try to figure out where a song would fit in a movie.  I sort of get lost in music sometimes and how it would play in a story.  Perhaps that is that writer inside of me that is trying to claw her way out.

3.       Small Town Saturday Night – Hal Ketchum – I saw Hal Ketchum here too.  Have you noticed something about the concerts in my town?  The artists are not current!  I did sort of see them though while they were still recognized.  I love the story this song tells.  My town is small, but it is not as small as the town in this song, although some of the “events” are true to my town.  It is pretty common for people to grab a six pack and a girl and call that a date.  Or it was.  I think they do other things now, those crazy youngsters.  It’s a catchy tune and it makes my list.  And even with the mullet, Hal Ketchum was a looker!
I rarely admit to liking country music and on a whole I don’t like it.  But every once and again a song or artist comes along that I like.  My reputation though remains firmly planted as anti-country.

Is there a genre of music that you don’t like but secretly have a song or two from it that is on your rotation?  Do you like or loathe country music?  Do you have a favorite song or artist to share with me to get me to change my mind?  Leave me a note and let me know.  Who knows your suggestion just might make a Music Monday.

Music Monday: Volume 1 Issue 5

I have a little tidbit for you today.  Artists, writers, and musicians use color in their work to convey a feeling.  The relationship between color and music is known as Synesthesia.  See I learn some things from school work.

Today I am back to the "Pick Three" or "Random Three"

  1. Cover Girl - New Kids On The Block - This will forever remind me of one of our last "family" vacations.  We (Mom, Pop, Sis and Me) went to Las Vegas for vacation and as always we drove.  Now Dad didn't mind driving per se, but he did mind driving in heavy traffic.  So in an effort to beat the morning commuters, he would get us up at 3:00 in the morning to hit the road (out of the Salt Lake area).  I remember this song playing and spilling Hawaiian Punch on my white tank top.  I also remember that this was the time before CDs and so I had to take the cassette tape out of my Walkman and flip it and fast-forward in order to rewind to hear it over again.  Old school kids, old school!
  2. Set Me In Motion - Bruce Hornsby - Another vacation reminder.  I think we were probably going to Wendover on this particular trip.  I remember recording a mix tape and this was one of the songs.  It is from the movie Backdraft, which was my obsession at the time.
  3. Ready to Go - Republica - on my iPod list because I am Jonesying on 90s music currently.  It takes me back to the latter part of the 1990s and being at the "rink" (Civic Center) for hockey!  I probably cranked this in my car while driving around with the windows down thinking I was cool or something. It is an energizing song and is on my swimming list.
Do you have a "Vacation" song?  Or do you have a "Sports" song?  Leave me a note and tell me your memories.

Music Monday: Volume 1 Issue 4

This past Thursday we went to see The Music of ABBA with Arrival.  It was amazing.  Nearly ten years ago (wow time flies) we saw Mamma Mia! in Las Vegas right as it opened.  This easily rivaled that!  I have loved ABBA for a long time now.  I am an old soul.  ABBA, Bee Gees, Disco, I love it all.  I sometimes think I was born a decade too late!  But the show was amazing, it was cozy and it was packed.  It was a fundraiser for the local Shriners and worth every single penny.

Since I can't seem to get ABBA out of my head, I thought I would share my top five favorite ABBA songs...

  1. Knowing Me, Knowing You - you can really see where they were in their personal lives with each other at this point.
  2. Angel Eyes - Another story of jilted love and a real jerk of a guy!
  3. Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) - Yes please.  I could use a man after midnight, or before.
  4. S.O.S. - A lot of "sad" songs that seem a little more upbeat than they should.
  5. Dancing Queen - duh!  How could this not make the list!?!?  This was the "encore" number, the get-up-on-your-feet and shake your booty song!
Do you love ABBA?  What is your favorite song?  Le me know!  I love to find fellow ABBA lovers!

Wednesday Roundup: October 3, 2012

I have a few fun things to share this week complete with (Oprah voice)...PHOTOS!

First up: On Friday I received my wonderful Halloween Swap package from the Knit & Crochet Dishcloth Swap group on Ravelry.  I am so in love with the cloth.  I was a bit hesitant to put it into use, but I gave in.  The colors are phenomenal together.  The Kit Kats didn't make the photo shoot.  They were delicious and hit the spot.  I received some maple leaves that might just get sprinkled on the dining room table and/or the mantle top for the fall months.  The note pad is already in use with my to do lists.

On Saturday we took a spontaneous trip to Helena to do some looking around. We scored some homemade dog bones for the boys, a cute collar bandanna for Shelby (it was hard to purchase a Raiders item...but I didn't vomit).  I also hit Ben Franklin and scored some new journaling supplies...

Monday was a very exciting mail day for me.  I could not wait for the postman and as usual, he took his sweet time getting here (it is 7:26 p.m. and he still has not gone by tonight!).  He brought me two things that I have been coveting for a while...

My brand new waterproof iPod shuffle and earphones.  Yes, I did say WATERPROOF!  I mentioned it on Music Monday, but it deserves another shoutout.  After two days of use, I am over the moon in love with it.  I completely block out everything else and get lost in the music and the water.  How do swimmers live without this?  If you want one of your very own...head over to amazon.

Dear Mr. Postman also brought this...

A Gadanke journal.  I have been reading Katie's blog for a while now and just had to get a journal.  I can't wait to start writing in it.  I just need to squeeze in some time.  I am hoping the next few days brings me some quiet/down time.

And there is my roundup.  I may have snow pictures to share next week!  The weather here turned in the middle of the night and folks 20-45 miles west of us had snow this morning.  I hear we had some flurries in the middle of the night, but I would not know because I was soundly sleeping.  Socks & sweater weather has arrived!

I wish you all a very happy and productive week filled with the ones you love and things you love to do!

Music Monday: Volume 1 Issue 3

Today's entry is a bit late (739 pm) because I was waiting for a delivery of a very special item...

My brand spankin' new WATERPROOF iPod shuffle w/earphones.  You read that right...WATERPROOF.  A swimmer's best friend.  It arrived this evening and after dinner, I set out to design a playlist that I could totally rock out to while doing laps.

I've been swimming for several weeks now and always thought, "Oh, music would be so great."  So I set out one afternoon to find waterproof MP3 players. I ordered one and it was on backorder and wasn't due in until October 12th!  Then I set out on and found this awesome deal!  A genuine iPod shuffle that has been waterproofed.  Perfect!

I can't wait for my swim tomorrow after work.

Here are three random songs that made the playlist

  1. Rock Your Body - Justin Timberlake
  2. 18 & Life - Skid Row (still going through my 90s phase)
  3. Teeth - Lady Gaga
By the way...there are 74 songs currently.  That is totally subject to change
